Day 1: Departure

San Diego to Houston: So far, our departure has been, thankfully, uneventful. The plane arrived and departed on time. There were no delays in the security line (only one extra security pat-down). This is the point in the trip that one wishes to be uneventful. The exciting stuff is supposed to happen after a safe arrival at our destination. As I write this, we are cruising comfortably a few thousand feet above the western United States and expecting an on-time arrival in Houston for our connecting flight to London.

Houston to London: We're currently cruising at approximately 37,000 feet above eastern Canada. Despite departing from Houston nearly an hour late, we are currently to arrive in London at 9:16 in the morning, a few minutes early. Our captain was so kind to inform us that he plans to push this massive beast of an airplane as fast as it will go. I'm not really sure I'm comfortable with him sharing that with us. That's probably something best left in the cockpit. It strikes me as strange that traveling these great distance has become such a passive endeavor. Here we sit in our cramped recliners. We first sat down in Houston. After eight hours of continuous sitting we will be in London. We will have covered a distance of about 5,000 miles firmly planted on our posteriors. No hoisting sails, no shuffleboard and cocktails (well, no shuffleboard, at least). I guess the advantage of this kind of travel experience is that it leaves all of the action for the destination. Looking forward to our first day in London. Goodnight for now.
